Review: The Codebreakers Secret by Sara Ackerman

A dual timeline story set in 1943 and 1965 and is about Isabel, a codebreaker stationed at Pearl Harbor and a journalist Lu,covering a hotel opening in Hawaii. Isabel works with highly classified intelligence and is brilliant at what she does, but when a friend goes missing, she starts to suspect someone is a traitor. Lu calls Hawaii her home and jumps at the chance to cover a big hotel opening in 1965, but when a high profile guest goes missing, she tries to uncover the mystery. Both stories eventually intertwine and Lu and Isabel’s lives intersect in an interesting way. The story was well done and the plot twist was good. I liked the characters of Lu and Isabel and liked that they were connected through the man Isabel loved. The atmosphere and the way the dual timeline is handled worked very well in this story.

A Murder In Hollywood: The Untold Story of Tinseltown’s Most Shocking Crime by Casey Sherman

This is the story of actress Lana Turner and the murder case she found herself involved in. The author takes us through Turners life, including abusive relationships with her different partners and husbands, and her association with mob bosses in Hollywood. It is through one boss, Mickey Cohen, that she meets Johnny Stampanato, Cohen’s bodyguard and Turner’s eventual boyfriend. He was abusive and controlling of Lana and she became tired and afraid of him. Their relationship comes to a violent end when Lana’s teenage daughter stabs Stampanato in defense of her mother. Cleared by the court, Cheryl, Lana’s daughter, eventually lives with her grandmother.  The author did well describing the era of Hollywood and what was going on with mobsters and movie studios controlling the artists. The writing was engaging and it almost read like a crime novel. I like the nostalgic feel of old Hollywood and Casey Sherman dove into the underbelly of the glamour of that time. Review: The Night Sister by Jennifer McMahon

A friendship between three girls is torn apart when they discover something grisly in a old tower of an abandoned motel. When something tragic happens to  Amy, Piper and her sister Margot have to deal with the past mystery as well as with how their friend died. The story is split between the three girls and Amy’s mom Rose and her sister Sylvie, who lived at the motel in better times. As the story plays out in both timelines, things eventually come together and mysteries are resolved. I thought some of the middle was kind of slow and the ending was not as strong as I would have liked. ⭐️⭐️.5 content warning: some strong language,mentions of abuse, some violence
