Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Caraval is about Scarlett, a girl who is about to marry a man who she doesn’t know, who wants to go to a different island to see a game called Caraval before she weds. Scarlett had to the head of Caraval, a mysterious man called Legend, for years begging them to come to the island she and her sister live on. For years she received no reply, but a week before her wedding Legend sends her three tickets to the game. Scarlett and her sister Tella live with their abusive father, and Scarlett hoped that she could save her sister and herself by her marriage. Her sister Tella has other ideas though. Tella encourages Scarlett to go to the game, but Scarlett is hesitant. A plan is formed to get Scarlett and Tella to the island the game is on with Tella going first and Scarlett, who was still reluctant, going after her sister. Once on the island, Scarlett realizes that her sister is nowhere to be found. With the help of Julian, the boy who helped Tella in her plan to get them at the game, Scarlett tries to find her sister. They have to enter and play the game of Caraval, which is not what it seems. It is emphasized throughout not to lose yourself in the world of the game. This was an entertaining read and a whimsically dark setting. I thought the story was pretty fast paced, and most of the characters were engaging. The romance was a little rushed I thought, but overall was a good story. This is the first book in a three book series and I can’t wait to read more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 content warning: physical abuse by the girls father, heavy kissing but nothing else some language and violence   #fantasy #caraval #fiction
