In 1948 Ruby Pearsall and Eleanor Quaries live different lives in different cities. Ruby lives with her aunt in Philadelphia and is in a special course to get into a good college. After an unwanted encounter with her mother’s boyfriend, she goes to live with her aunt. She starts a relationship with a Jewish man, threatening her dreams for college. Eleanor is attending the prestigious Howard University, working in the library with an archivist. There she meets handsome William Pride and her life changes forever. William and his family are wealthy and among the D.C elite. They start a relationship even though William’s mother doesn’t approve. Both Eleanor and Ruby find themselves pregnant with William marrying Eleanor, but Ruby has to go to a home for troubled girls who are pregnant. This home let’s well to do couples adopt the babies of single mothers. Ruby has to deal with racial discrimination and cruelty from the women in charge of the home. Eleanor has a couple miscarriages and is told she should not try to have more naturally, so adoption is an option. Ruby has her baby and has to give her up, even though a part of her longs for her baby. She finishes her education to be an optometrist, while Eleanor tries to bond with her new baby. This was well written and interesting story that ends well. The stories of the girls in the home were heartbreaking as well as the prejudice Ruby and her boyfriend faced.
